I've been working away at a new series of sculptures for my upcoming show with Leslie in August. Life is very busy but the evenings are a wonderful time to just sit down, relax and weave....a bit at a time, and it will all get done. Our show opening is happening on Thursday, August 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. at the Art Centre, Denman Island, BC. Hope to see you there!
The christmas faire was wonderful this year! I meet lots of new people who have moved to Denman including two metalsmiths, I was thrilled! I always enjoy the exchange of knowledge. Thank you to everyone who supported me with your purchases this year! Here's a picture of a new sculpture in progress. I've uploaded new images from my small sculpture series on the main page.
I'm getting ready for the Christmas Craft faire coming up Dec 3rd and 4th on Denman Island. This year i'm creating smaller sculptures, mirrors, and art jewellery. While the build up to the faire is all consumming I always enjoy the ambience of the community hall once i'm set up and ready to go. It's a lovely community event. Hope to see you there!
(Above is a detailed shot of one of my smaller sculptures). With the Denman Island Studio Tour behind me i'm beginning a new series of pieces similar to "Explorations", incorporating copper and willow, but in a smaller format. After working on a large scale in recent years it's nice to to be working in a smaller format again. I will be posting the remaining pieces in my abstract small sculptures series, which are all 12 x 12 inches, later this week. Thank you to all who came to my studio over the studio tour weekend! Over 130 people came and overall it was a fantastic experience.
I've recently added a list of resources for metal artists on my site and will be updating as I come across more books and sites that you may find useful as well. I haven't posted all my favorite books/sites yet so check back soon. Happy reading!
I recently saw the work of Alastair Heseltine from Hornby Island, B.C. His sculpture is outstanding. I'm very inspired. Here's the link:
http://www.alastairheseltine.com/installations.htm I've been experimenting with embossing on paper, photographs, and copper foil. The effects are wonderful. I'm trying all different variations of patterns and colouring techniques. I'm going to initially incorporate these miniature pieces into the Arts Denman sketchbook project, being shown at the Denman Arts Centre in August 2011, and then work them into larger sculptures at a later date. I don't often keep notes on my process but I think it will be a good practice. I'll post pictures soon. Thanks for checking the blog!
I came across a fantastic youtube video today presented by master silversmith Davide Bigazzi. He's demonstrating chasing and repousse techniques. Check it out! Here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YAIwQzmn7E. In the pursuit of metal weaving techniques i've come across some fantastic metal artists over the years. A few that truly stand out for me in regards to the quality of their work, and their willingness to share their knowledge, are Arline M. Fisch, Mary Lee Hu, David Paul Bacharach, and John Searles. Metal is such a wonderful medium to work with. I enjoy exploring all the textures that can be created, the variation of colours achieved, and the endless weaving techniques that can be applied.
